Question:

My query is that is it makruh to take ghusl and change into clean clothes on Thursday? Taking ghusl on Friday is of great importance but is it Makru if taken on Thursday and changed clothes? JazakAllah

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Sayyidna Aws Bin Aws raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s messenger ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said to him, “if anyone has a bath on Friday, and gives a bath, and goes early to the masjid, hears the imams sermon from the beginning, being near the imam and keeping quiet throughout, then for him a reward is credited against every step for a year’s fasting and standing in tahajjud prayer” (Sunan Tirmidhi)

Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Shafiee, Imam Ahmad raḥimahullāh (may Allāh have mercy upon him) all agree that the Ghusl for Jummah is a Sunnah and not Waajib. (Dars Tirmidhi p263 v2)

Every Muslim should make preparations for Jummah from Thursday. After the Asr Salaah on Thursday he should make a lot of Istigfaar. He should clean his clothes and keep them ready. The pious people of the past have stated that the person to receive the most benefit on Friday will be that person who waits for it and who makes preparations for it from Thursday. (Behishti Zewar p.235 Umdatul Fiqh p.457 v.2)

With regards to your question, the Sunnah method is to have a bath on the Friday (starting from after Fajr). Having a bath on the Thursday will not fulfil the Sunnah. However, it is not Makrooh to have a bath on the Thursday. (Mazaahirul Haq Jadeed p882 v1)
