Question:

There are many times that I have made du’a and thereafter did not see the effect of that du’a. This makes me feel very hopeless and I feel discouraged from continuing to make du’a for my need. Please can I have advice on how to stop feeling this way. Is there a sin I may be doing that causes my du’as to be rejected?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Translation: Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ “O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins.1 He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The Prophet PBUH says in a narration:

“Indeed amazing are the affairs of a believer! They are all for his benefit. If he is granted ease of living he is thankful and this is best for him.

And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres; and this is best or him.2” (Muslim)

A key thing for a Muslim to remember throughout their life is never to give up hope in Allah. Allah is always present and he is always with us. As Muslims, this is a core part of our belief. Even if at times, it is difficult to feel this way based on current feeling of despondency, to ensure ourselves with the belief that whether it be night or day, in secret or in open, to ourselves or out loud whenever we call out to Allah that he there and ever present. It is necessary to know that allah can hear for every call and prayer and it is also important to know that he will answer our prayers if not immediately, then later with something better with the addition of removing a difficulty which would be much more testing for us. And the final way of Allah answering our prayers is saving it for us I the hereafter which will be an unimaginable scale and beyond our comprehension. Therefore, we need to be able to continue to pray to Allah with full belief and conviction that he has the power to answer our prayers and he will answer our prayers in one form or another, all in our best interests.
