Question

I have a question. My friend and me had talked about alcohol and drinking it 40 days before Ramadan. I told him that if he or she drinks will be forgiven if I asked for forgiveness during Ramadan and that his prayer would be accepted. Then he has told me and he has drunk, and that I had guided him in the wrong way and that I will sin too.  Is that true?

Answer

Repentance is essential for every sin, even if it is something between a person and Allah and has nothing to do with the rights of another person. There are three conditions of repentance:

1-     You should give up the sin

2-     You should regret having done it

3-     You should resolve never to go back to it.

If one of these three is missing, then your repentance is not sincere. If the sin has to do with the rights of another person, then there are four conditions: the three mentioned above and restoring the rights of that person. (Riyaadus Saliheen)

It is your job to help others but it is ultimately their own decision to sin. Unless you were involved in that sin directly or indirectly yourself then you will not be held accountable for the sins of others.
