Question

$1500 from the wealth of the deceased was left aside to make a stone that was to be put on his grave. A year passes and due to reasons that money is still there and they weren't able to place an order for the stone yet, will they pay Zakat on that $1500?

Answer:

Zakat is compulsory upon all monetary assets when the money is in possession for one lunar (Islamic) year and it reaches the nisaab amount (after deducting any debts and usual expenses)[1].

Concerning the money for the tombstone, if it is above the nisaab amount then Zakat will have to be deducted from it.
