Question

We have always had 2 Athans in our Masajids, but the town I’ve been traveling to for work only call 1 Athan on Jummah. They said it is the Sunnah.
Could you please help clarify?

Answer:

Imam Quduri has explained that there are two Adhans for Jumuah prayer: “When the Muadhdhin calls the first adhan on a Friday, the people stop selling and buying and proceed towards the Jumuah prayer. When the imam ascends the Mimbar, he sits on it and the Muadhdhin calls the adhan in front of the Mimbar.” [See Mukhtasar Al-Quduri p. 66, Taha Publishers, 2010]

The reason why this person is objecting is because of the following narration: “`Uthman bin `Affan introduced the second Adhan on Fridays when the number of the people in the mosque increased. Previously the Adhan on Fridays used to be pronounced only after the Imam had taken his seat (on the pulpit).” [Bukhari #915] The overwhelming majority of scholars continued the practice from that time and it is therefore considered to be the Sunnah. Since the Prophet encouraged us to follow the way of the rightly guided leaders afterward, and since the purpose of the additional adhan is still relevant, this should be followed. Continue the practice of calling two adhans.
