Question

I heard that if you buy a house, you should recite the entire Surah Baqarah because the bad jinns will leave the house that way.

Is this correct?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

There is no specific relation to reciting Surah al-Baqarah when moving into a new house. Rather we should continually recite Surah al-Baqarah wherever we live as it is a means of protection from the Shayateen.

As recorded in the Hadith of our noble Prophet :

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (s.a.w) as saying:

“Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqarah is recited.”

(Sahih Muslim Hadith Number 18)

It is important that we remember that moving into a new home is a blessing and a rizq from Allah (swt) and we should praise and thank Him for bestowing his Mercy upon us.

One of the fundamental ways that we are protected from Shaytaan and other evil is to ensure that we always act in complete obedience to Allah (swt) and live by Quran and Sunnah. Therefore we must ensure our means of gaining this new home is through a halal method and a halal income, that all the salah and other obligations are performed, and that all forms of forbidden things are avoided. If we live our lives according to what Allah (swt) has guided us towards, and always remember him, then we will see His (swt) blessings and protection in all aspects of our lives and within our homes.

The following Hadith shows what a great impact the remembrance of Allah (swt) has in protection from the Shaytaan.

Jabir reported that the Prophet (pbuh) said,

"When a man enters his house, he should mention Allah Almighty, both when he enters and when he eats. If he does so, Shaytan says (i.e. to the shayatin), 'You cannot spend the night or eat.' When he enters and does not mention Allah when he enters, Shaytan says, 'You have got your lodgings for the night and your supper.'" (Adab al-Mufrad Hadith Number 1096)
