There is a hadees which means “one who will wear cloth of publicity in this world Allah will make him wear cloth of disrespect in jahannam”<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the meaning of this hadees?<\/span><\/p>\n

You are likely referring to the following Hadeeth in Ibn Majah:<\/span><\/p>\n

It was narrated that Ibn \u2018Umar said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) said: \u2018Whoever wears a garment of pride and vanity, Allah will clothe him, on the Day of Resurrection, in a garment of humiliation.\u2019\u201d (Sunan Ibn Majah, 3606)<\/span><\/p>\n

The phrase \u201cgarment of pride and vanity\u201d refers to clothes which a person wears to make himself known amongst the people (to the extent that he is recognized by the clothing) out of pride and arrogance over the people (Ihdaa Ad-Dibajah Bi Sharh Ibn Majah, Pg 670). For example, wearing clothes to give the appearance of or show off worldly fame, or to show asceticism. Similarly, wearing the clothing of a scholar when one is not a scholar, etc (Shurooh Ibn Majah, Pg 1323). Allah will punish such a person (who wears clothes for fame), on the Day of Judgement, by clothing him in clothes that will humiliate him (Ihdaa Ad-Dibajah Bi Sharh Ibn Majah, Pg 671).<\/span><\/p>\n

This Hadeeth indicates the prohibition of wearing clothes for fame, whether it is wearing good quality clothes to appear rich etc or wearing the clothing of poor people to appear poor (Ihdaa Ad-Dibajah Bi Sharh Ibn Majah, Pg 671).<\/span><\/p>\n
