{"id":2608,"date":"2011-09-02T15:25:27","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daruliftabirmingham.co.uk\/wp\/?p=2608"},"modified":"2011-09-02T15:25:27","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T15:25:27","slug":"salaam-to-non-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/daruliftabirmingham.co.uk\/home\/salaam-to-non-muslims\/","title":{"rendered":"Salaam to non-Muslims"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Is it permitted to say salam to non-Muslims.<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.<\/p>\n<pre>Answer:<\/pre>\n<pre>In another Hadith Anas bin Malik narrates that the Prophet (sallal lahu alayhi wa sallam) said, <em>\u201cIf the people of the Scripture greet you, then you should say (in reply), wa'alaikum (and on you).\u201d <\/em>(Bukhari: 8.275)<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a further Hadith Usama bin Zaid (radi allahu anhu) narrates that \u2026 <em>the Prophet (sallal lahu alayhi wa sallam) passed by a gathering in which &#8216;Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul was present\u00a0 and that was before &#8216;Abdullah bin Ubai embraced Islam. Behold in that gathering there were people of different religions: there were Muslims, pagans, idol-worshippers and Jews\u2026Then Allah&#8217;s Apostle greeted them and stopped and dismounted and invited them to Allah (i.e. to embrace Islam) and recited to them the Holy Qur&#8217;an\u2026<\/em> (Bukhari: 6.89)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the above Ahadiths it can be concluded that Muslims when meeting non-Muslims should not initiate the greeting (salam). However if they greet you with salam then reply with the words \u201cwa\u2019alaikum\u201d. If when greeting a group which consists of Muslims and non-Muslims, then it is permissible to greet them with salam.
