I am breastfeeding my one-year-old child and I have tried my best recently to make up fasts from last year after I had my baby, by missing a day or two between fasts. However, it is affecting my milk supply and I am developing weakness and pain in my body which is made worse by a condition that I have.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I wasn’t sure at the time whether I had to fidya as well, but with Ramadhan approaching, I am worried about what to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I feel I’ll struggle to fast the entire month this year, as much as I’ve really been wanting to, and how it would affect my overall health and my child’s nutrition. I also have two other disabled children who require full-time care and I worry about how well I’ll be able to care for them too due to my own weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Please can you clarify if I can exempt myself from fasting again this year and if I need to pay fidya or make up the fasts later when my child is less reliant on my milk?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If fasting will affect your milk supply and harm the baby, you will be exempt from fasting. If your one-year-old child has started weaning, as is usual by this age, then substituting more food for milk usually works well as there is less demand for the mother\u2019s milk. In this case, if you can increase the baby\u2019s food you should do so and fast. You do not need to pay fidya, rather the missed fasts will have to be made up when you are able to do so. This can be difficult so it is advisable to speak to a Muslim doctor and try and implement a plan whereby you miss the least number of fasts as possible. Please note some amount of weakness is normal during fasting and does not exempt a person from fasting. If this weakness and pain are very severe, and debilitating and do not decrease with the body\u2019s customisation to fasting for a few days then you must speak to a Muslim doctor. If the doctor advises not fasting, or you know from previous experience that fasting is the cause or factor in your condition, you will be exempt from fasting. Fidya is only payable to those people who have such an illness whereby there is no hope of recovery- such as very old age or a chronic illness.<\/span><\/p>\n
