Many Muslims mistakenly believe that planting vegetation next to graves will alleviate the punishment of the individuals buried there by doing zikr. The misconception is brought about by an incorrect understanding of the following hadith.<\/span><\/p>\n

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Allah’s Messenger (\ufdfa) passed by two graves and said, “Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. As for this one, he did not save himself from being soiled with his urine, and as for the other, he used to go about spreading gossip. The Prophet (\ufdfa) then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces planted one on each grave and said, “It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 6052 and 216]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the scholars’ interpretation of the aforementioned hadith, the lessening of punishment was due to the Prophet’s \ufdfa personal intercession for the two people buried there. Allah sent revelation to the Prophet \ufdfa instructing him to split a leaf (or twig, according to some scholars) into two pieces and place one piece on each grave, stating that his intercession has been accepted until the leaf or twig dries.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was a unique privilege Allah granted to the Prophet \ufdfa and is not the same for every Muslim. Hence, there would be no benefit if a Muslim planted any sort of vegetation next to a grave and believed that it would, be bidah or an innovation in the religion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the graveyards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet (\ufdfa) said, “These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid).” The Prophet (\ufdfa) then added, “Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). The Prophet (\ufdfa) then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave.
