I have a question. What’s the ruling, if a student heavily cheats on his final exam, to the point he’s not sure whether he’d pass if he didn’t cheat or not? Then, he used the certificate to further his studies. And, his parents provide an allowance for him to use to buy food and his necessity. Since he kind of used an unethical way to get into the university and his parents didn’t know of this, is it okay for him to use the money to buy his daily meals? And also, is it haram for him to continue studying there, since he’s not sure whether he’d even be accepted there if he didn’t cheat?<\/span><\/p>\n

Islam teaches us to act and behave in the best of ways and not to degrade ourselves by doing acts which will eventually harm us whether in this life or the next. Allah Taala mentions in the Quran that He does not like those who are deceitful and cunning and that in the end, they are only deceiving themselves in surah an-Nisaa (n.o. 4) verse number 107, but at the same time Allah Taala is most Forgiving as is mentioned in verse number 110 that by seeking earnest forgiveness He will surely forgive us. (1)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rasulullah SallAllahu Alayhi Wasallam has mentioned in a hadith that whoever cheats is not from us. (2)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As for your questions;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. He will be sinful for cheating in exams as it’s a form of betrayal and thus unlawful.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. He is permitted to use the allowance his parents give to him for his daily food. This daily allowance will not be \u201ccontaminated\u201d due to him cheating in exams.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. It will be permissible for him to carry on his studies but it\u2019s important that he rectifies himself by seeking earnest forgiveness and making a firm resolve not to do it again.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Any sin whether big or small has an effect on one’s heart such that it will become stained and darkened and it is purified and cleansed by doing tawbah and seeking forgiveness from Allah Taala.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
