Is it right that Tafweed al-Kayfiyyah and Tafweed al-Ma\u2019naa are both correct?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For attributes such as “hand,” “face,” etc., some people do Tafweed al-Ma\u2019naa, saying their meanings are known only to Allah. Others who do Tafweed al-Kayfiyyah say that the meaning is the apparent one, but the kayfiyyah (modality) is unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Also, some people say that the meaning of the attribute depends on the context of the Ayah.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I also read that Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahib says both are right. Could you please clarify?<\/span><\/p>\n

There are various schools of thought in Aqidah.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Salaf (early generations of Muslims) would practice Tafweed al-Kayfiyyah.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In other words, they would affirm the beautiful names and sublime attributes of Allah, and acknowledge and believe in their meanings, but they leave the knowledge of how and in what manner they exist\/occur to Allah Ta’ala. This conforms to the Madhhab of the Atharis.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For example, they believe that Allah Ta\u2019ala rose upon His Throne in a manner that befits His Majesty. They understand the meaning of the word \u0627\u0633\u062a\u0648\u0627\u0621 (rose), but the manner of how Allah Ta’ala rose upon His Throne is only known to Allah. They are literalists and do not engage in ta\u2019weel (interpretation).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Khalaf (later generations) practice Tafweed al-Ma\u2019naa.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This means that they believe in the words of the holy texts but leave the interpretation and meaning of the words up to Allah Ta’ala. Thus, the meaning of \u0627\u0633\u062a\u0648\u0627\u0621 (rising upon the Throne) has an interpretation which is only known to Allah Ta’ala.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Many of the Khalaf do not believe that Allah Ta’ala literally rose upon His Throne since Allah does not resemble His creation in any way. There are multiple implicit definitions of the word \u0627\u0633\u062a\u0648\u0627\u0621. Again, instead of pondering, researching, and choosing a meaning, they leave the meaning of this word up to Allah Ta’ala. This conforms to the Madhhab of the Ash\u2018aris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which opinion is correct?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Both Madhhabs are correct in the sense that they both conform to the beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa\u2019ah. We do not consider the Aqidah of either Madhhab to be incorrect. This could have been what Mufti Taqi Saheb (May Allah Ta’ala preserve him) concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hence, we do not declare followers of either Madhhab to be a disbeliever, blasphemer, or an innovator. Most Athari scholars reject Tafweed al-Ma\u2019naa. However, the Ash\u2018aris and Maturidis do not consider the opposing school of thought (Tafweed al-Kayfiyyah) to be illegitimate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, most Ash\u2018ari scholars do not oppose Atharis, even though Ash\u2018aris believe their own opinion to be stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n
