Question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What got me confusion is that some people on the internet described “istikhfaf” wrong and said it means “taking a ruling lightly”. I did not understand what they meant and I doubt even if it is true, because I saw the real description of it by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam (of Leicester) and by other good Mufti’s too. If a Muslim does sadly everyday a Major Sin like drinking alcohol, and persists on it but he knows that he is sinning and knows that is doing something impermissible. But sometimes one knows that he is sinning at that very moment but is not really aware of the wrongness\/greatness of what he is doing because of weak Iman. By habit if one persists doing a major sin, (he knows that’s a major sin) he will become numb to it, sadly. That doesn’t mean that he has disdain towards the deen or disdain to the ruling, or regards it as unworthy of attention and is a Disbeliever, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

Istikhfaaf means to take something lightly or to treat something as being frivolous.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

E.g., If someone finds faults with Allah Ta’ala or finds flaws in our beloved Messenger of Allah (SAW), then they are treating their Lord and his Messenger with disdain and frivolity. This person is considered to be a disbeliever.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Istikhfaaf of Allah\u2019s commandments<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In terms of actions, if a person regards Witr prayer or Sunnah Mu\u2019akkadah prayer to be unimportant and frivolous, they have made istikhfaaf of the rituals\/commandments of our perfect Deen. One must not treat Allah\u2019s commandments and prohibitions with disdain. Of course, if they do not pray these prayers due to laziness and Fisq (living a sinful life) but they are cognisant about its importance and seriousness, they have not committed istikhfaaf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Istikhfaaf of Disobedience<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If a person persists in a sin due to his weak Iman or due to being addicted to that sin, however he recognises how punishable and severe that sin is, then he is not counted as one who makes istikhfaaf of Deen and its prohibitions. He is only counted as making istikhfaaf of the sin if he treats the sin lightly and is not afraid of the punishment for it. Of course, persisting in a sin can eventually cause a person to deem that sin to be not serious. That is why it is important to continuously make Tawbah (repentance) every time he returns to that sin. This way, he will remember the seriousness of the sin every time he commits it. In the Noble Hadith of Rasulullah (SAW):<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu Bakr narrated: That the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) said: \u201cHe who seeks forgiveness has not been persistent in sin, even if he does it seventy times in a day.\u201d Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3559<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hence, the one who persists in sin is not a disbeliever. But if he takes the matter lightly and commits the sin as he does permissible things, without hating it or fearing the consequences, his faith will be rendered invalid.<\/span><\/p>\n
