Assalamu alaykum. There is a lot of confusion around what is the correct aqeedah. Are the Maturidi and Ashari aqeedah stances correct? I’ve heard from du’aat that the attributes of Allah such as Hand are to be taken literally and not interpreted. Is this position correct? How do we interpret these attributes?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Asharis, Maturidi, and Athari Aqeedah stances are all valid and the followers of all three madhabs are deemed to be from Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah. Asharis + Maturidis do have a difference of opinion with the Atharis in terms of Tafweed.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Tafweed<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Atharis practice Tafweedul Kayfiyyah.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In other words, they affirm the beautiful names and sublime attributes of Allah, and acknowledge and believe in their apparent\/literal meanings, but they leave the knowledge of how and in what manner it existed\/occurred to Allah Ta’ala. E.g. Allah Ta’ala\u2019s rising upon his throne (istiwa). Atharis believe in the apparent meaning; that Allah Ta’ala has literally established himself above his throne; but in a manner that befits his majesty. Thus, they accept the apparent meaning, but the Kayfiyyah (manner) in which Allah Ta’ala rose upon his throne is only known to Allah Ta’ala.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asharis and Maturidis practice Tafweedul Ma\u2019naa.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This means that they believe in the words of the holy texts, but leave the interpretation and meaning of the words up to Allah Ta’ala. Thus, the meaning of \u0627\u0633\u062a\u0648\u0627\u0621 \/ rising upon the throne has an interpretation which is only known to Allah Ta’ala. Hence, Asharis and Maturidis do Tafweed in the following sense:<\/span><\/p>\n

They affirm what Allah has affirmed; not more and not less. In this case they affirm the istiwa (rising).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They negate what Allah has decisively negated, which is any resemblance whatsoever between Allah Ta’ala and His creation. This is a negation that one with sound intellect can deduce. This is further supported by the following verse:<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, they leave the specific meaning and manner of istiwa up to Allah.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, Asharis do not simply believe in the apparent meaning, but they do not negate that which Allah has affirmed in the Quran. They simply believe that istiwa, yadullah (hand of Allah), etc. is from the Mutashabihaat (those unclear statements whose meaning is only known to Allah).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is one of the main differences of opinion as you mentioned in your question.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In conclusion, both madhabs are correct in the sense that they both conform to the beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa\u2019ah. We do not declare followers of either madhab to be a disbeliever, blasphemer, nor an innovator. Asharis and Maturidis simply believe their own opinion to be stronger and more correct; however, they do not deem the Athari view to be illegitimate nor invalid.<\/span><\/p>\n

I advise you to follow the more mainstream Ashari and Maturidi schools of thought because their beliefs are closer to the true Aqidah of the Salaf. Furthermore, some modern day Salafi Atharis are too literal in their interpretation of the Quran. They are anthropomorphists who believe Allah Ta’ala literally has a face and hands, etc. May Allah Ta’ala protect us from such beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is much safer for the soundness of your Iman to follow the Ashari and Maturidi schools of thought.<\/span><\/p>\n
