Question:

If a Muslim divorces his wife one or two and she married another man who later divorced her. If the first husband intend to marry her again, with how many ropes their new marriage is going to be contracted (1,2 or 3)?

Answer:

Bismillah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

In the aforementioned situation, according to Imam Abu Hanifah raḥimahullāh (may Allāh have mercy upon him) if the first husband gave his wife three talaqs and she married another husband who later divorced her and she returns back to the first husband, the first husband will have a new set of three talaqs. Similarly, if the first husband gave one or two talaqs and the wife went and married someone else who later divorced her and the wife remarries the first husband, the first husband will also have a new set of three talaqs.
