Tattooing is not permissible in Islam. Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrated that Ibn Umar said, that he heard the Prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam say: "Do not practice tattooing and do not get yourselves tattooed." (al-Bukhari, hadith 5946). There is an element of mutilation in tattooing, and mutilation is impermissible in Islam. Abdullah Ibn Yazid Al Ansari Radiallahu Anhu narrated that "the Prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam forbade robbery and mutilation [of bodies]." (al-Bukhari, hadith 2474). Additionally, the face is considered a sacred and respected part of one's body. Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrated that the Prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam said: "If somebody fights, then he should avoid the face." (al-Bukhari, hadith 2559).
Based on these ahadith, the majority of scholars have recommended against face painting.
