Question

Asalamwalekum,

I have been looking to find someone to get married to for a while now.

I came across quite a few people, but for one reason on the other, it has always been difficult to find a match.

I came across a girl from Lahore, Pakistan. After knowing each other over the phone we decided to involve the families, once families made initial contact the girl told me that in the past she has been subject to black magic up until 2014 when she was finally cured by the grace of ALLAH. However, she cannot visit my family town as she suspects the people that did this to her, where from there and whenever she goes there it comes back, later she told me that she has asked the people involved in her treatment and can now visit my hometown.

I am unsure about what to do, and she has also performed istikhara and said that it was positive, however, my family is now concerned for my well-being if I indeed marry this person as they believe the black magic could affect her again, which will create an issue for me and my future family.

What is the Islamic ruling on this issue and what should be my next steps in the light of Quran and Sunnah?

ALLAH HAFIZ

Answer

Firstly, we need to make clear that any contact with a non-mahram of the opposite gender (even with the intention of marriage) is unlawful.

The concept of black magic has been proven through the Holy Quran:

‘SulaimanAlaihis Salam did not disbelieve but the devils disbelieved, teaching the people black magic’

(Surah Baqarah, Verse 102).

It was narrated from AishahRadiAllahuAnha that:

The Messenger of Allah said: “Marriage is part of my Sunnah, and whoever does not follow my Sunnah has nothing to do with me. Get married, for I will boast of your great numbers before the nations. Whoever has the means, let him get married, and whoever does not, then he should fast for it will diminish his desire.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Marriage, Hadith 1846).

Marriage is a highly emphasised sunnah of the Prophet SAW. And when one finds a suitable match he should not delay.

Although Islam acknowledges the concept of black magic, we cannot forget that ultimate control lies in the hands of Allah SWT alone.

With regards to your question, you should place trust in Allah SWT and proceed with this proposal (with the blessings of your parents). I pray Allah SWT eases your affairs. Ameen.

Only Allah knows best.
