Question

Who are called the munafiqs? Those who do not perform salat or those who do not keep promises?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Munafiq is the one who does not keep promises as narrated Abdullah bin Amr: The Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite (Munafiq) and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.

1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.

2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.

3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.

4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner."[1]

The one who does not perform salah

The one who does not pray, out of heedlessness concerning it and out of a lack of regard for its importance, is the one concerning whom Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik and Imam Shafi ruled that he is an evildoer (Fasiq).[2]
