Question:
Is sleeping naked permissible provided that the door is locked and guaranteed no one will enter the room as well as before going naked, you recites ayatul kursi to be protected from jinns?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
It is highly discouraged to sleep naked, even if sleeping alone confined to one’s room. This is because it is contrary to modesty. As Muslims, we uphold the principle of modesty and remain conscious that Allah (ﷻ) is always watching, even when we are alone. Allah (ﷻ) says:
O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful. (At-Tawbah 7:26)
˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do. … And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. (An-Nur 24:30-31)
As Muslims, we should dress modestly in public and private as much as we can. The Hadith emphasize modesty and discourage exposing the ‘Awrah, even when alone. Therefore, one should avoid exposing oneself more than necessary. It has been narrated that:
Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is a branch of faith. (Sahih Muslim 35b)
“My father narrated to me from my grandfather, who said: ‘I said: “O Messenger of Allah! Regarding our ‘Awrah, what of it must we cover and what of it may we leave?” He said: “Protect your ‘Awrah except from your wife or what your right hand possesses.”‘ He said: “What about a man with another man?” He said: “If you are able to not let anyone see it, then do so.” I said: “What about a man when he is alone?” He said: “Allah is most deserving of being shy from Him.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2769)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw a man washing in a public place without a lower garment. So he mounted the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah and said: Allah is characterised by modesty and concealment. So when any of you washes, he should conceal himself. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4012)
Awrah of a Man
The Awrah for a man extends from below the navel (belly-button) to below the knees, both in public and private settings. This is the minimum amount to cover during Salāt and what is permissible to expose. [1] Men should not expose anything beyond this area in front of both Mahrams and Non-Mahrams. They should only uncover their ‘Awrah when necessary, and only for as long as needed.
Awrah of a Woman
The Awrah for a woman in front of Non-Mahrams and during Salāt includes everything except her face, hands (excluding the wrists), and feet (excluding the ankles). In front of Mahrams, a woman may also reveal her hair, head, neck, chest, arms, and legs below the knees. [2, 3] Women should not expose more than this in front of both Mahrams and Non-Mahrams. They should only uncover their ‘Awrah when necessary, and only for as long as needed.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
