Question:
When making dua whilst fasting, if a person makes dua and starts crying due to it, and then he tastes something salty inside (but the tears haven’t entered the mouth since the person kept wiping them with a napkin) would this invalidate the fast?
Or is it fine given that the saltiness was inside and no tears should’ve entered the mouth?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
A small amount of sweat or tears unintentionally falling into an individual’s mouth does not break the fast unless the taste is felt throughout the mouth and a large amount of it is deliberately gathered and swallowed. Whilst you have mentioned that you are certain no tears entered your mouth, you may need to consider if the saltiness you felt in your mouth came from blood from your gums. Swallowing blood from the gums invalidates the fast if it is more than one’s saliva, and this can also be determined through a strong taste in the mouth.[1]
If an individual feels the sensation of saltiness in the mouth and they are certain this flavour has not come from a substance entering the mouth, then their fast is intact as they have not swallowed anything. It would be more cautious, however, for such an individual to ensure the flavour is not swallowed.[2]
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
