Question:
i suffer from waswas and i think it is coming back. now i fear if i am even muslim at all or if i’ve fallen into apostasy without realising. i was reading something which said if u smile u were a murderer in your past life and obviously i didn’t belive this but i thought it was funny and smiled not knowing it would be shirk and then after i thought to myself did i just commit shirk and quickly repented and did my shahada but do i need to do ghusl and also i fear that i might’ve also left islam again when i might’ve joked about islam without knowing it would cause cause apostasy but at the same time i don’t know if i joked about islam or not but if i laugh at a joke like when i fart it salah does this cause apostasy also would this mean thsi whole time i was an apostate even though i did not know. also say i need to do ghusl and can i do this in braids
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Firstly, you must avoid reading material containing elements of Kufr (disbelief). Nevertheless, unless you explicitly utter words of Kufr or genuinely believe in blasphemous ideologies like reincarnation, you are still Muslim. [3] Thus, if your belief in Allah ﷻ is sound, smiling due to reading superstitious content does not remove you from the fold of Islam.
Joking about Islam or belittling/mocking any aspect of the Deen is tantamount to Kufr. [1, 2] However, you are extremely doubtful in this regard; thus, if you can clearly recall a specific occasion in which you mocked Islam, you must retake your Shahadah. If you cannot remember any specific occasion, and you are simply doubting yourself, then you have not committed apostasy. [4] Laughing after breaking wind in Salah is immature; however, if you simply found the flatulence to be humorous, you have not committed Kufr.
Hence, please stop doubting your Islam, as certainty is not removed by doubt. You are sure that you are a believing Muslim; thus, any doubts about what occurred in the past should be disregarded and not revisited, unless you distinctly remember a specific occasion where you mocked Islam. [5, 6]
Females with braided hair must ensure that water reaches the roots of every hair, i.e. where it joins the scalp, and she is exempt from wetting the braided section. [7] However, again, there is no need to retake Shahadah and perform Ghusl due to mere doubts.
Do not heed Shaytan’s whispers and seek medical treatment for your the OCD you are experiencing. Finally, please remain in a state of constant Dhikr (remembrance of Allah ﷻ) to ward off the Shaytan’s whispers. Allah ﷻ says in the Noble Quran:
{ وَمَن یَعۡشُ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ نُقَیِّضۡ لَهُۥ شَیۡطَـٰنࣰا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِینࣱ }
[Surah Az-Zukhruf: 36]
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful – We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
Thus, recite your daily Adhkar and duas to protect against the Shaytan.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
