Question:
I recently have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and it causes a great deal of urine hesitancy. It can take me multiple trips (3-7+ times), with roughly 5-7 minutes walking in-between to encourage flow, to the bathroom before I can consider my bladder empty.
I have tried to empty my bladder as much as possible but now I get too fatigued to do Salah. I clumsily also poorly handle the pad to soak my urine so I have to shower more often.
Is there a concessionary way of fulfilling tahara?
Lastly, I have been suffering from a lot of forgetfulness/uncertainty in Salah.
It has now become a case where 9/10 of my salahs involve a sajda as-sahw. I am concerned about my relationship with Allah and the validity of these prayers. A lot of the times it feels like I am 'spacing out' and having a hard time concentrating.
This happened even before the urine condition with its own physical fatigue element. I make dua and hoped that the forgetfulness would go away.
I tend to forget my place in fatiha a lot, forget number of rakahs, unsure if I am pronouncing the qira'a properly (thus I try to repeat and articulate but tend to make more mistakes).
It is a long-standing issue, it tends to happen more at my house than in the masjid, and it concerns me.
I have in the past done excessively long Salah’s in masjid to compensate for the poor concentration at home but this is not good for Riya and Ayn.
I truly want to connect with my Lord privately but this barrier only discourages me.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
As far as Fiqh is concerned, if you are having this regular discharge, but it doesn’t encompass an entire prayer time, then you should continue to place a tissue/pad to catch all the urine.
When you know the urine has stopped you may remove the tissue/pad, change your undergarments (if need be), clean yourself and perform wudu/prayer.
However, one will become a Ma’zoor if the state of impurity lasts for one complete duration of a Salah time.
If throughout this time, blood, urine or any other impurities flows or drips continuously, not enabling one to make wudu and perform the Fardh Salah with purity, then one will be known as a Ma’zoor and make one wudu for each salaah.
If this does not apply to you, then you must continue purifying yourself every time before praying or reciting the Quran.
With regards to improving our concentration in Salah, one must ensure that he is properly preparing himself before he stands in front of Allah (swt). One must try to cancel out any noise and pray in a peaceful and quiet place to increase concentration.
Other helpful tips are learning the translations and commentary of the commonly recited verses, supplications and adhkar (praises of Allah) that are part of salat and to realize and keep in mind that when we are standing in Salah, we are standing in front of Allah (swt), our creator.
Continue to beseech the help of Allah (swt) and make sincere dua to Allah (swt) for concentrating.
