Question:
A woman once used to commit sins like masturbation and pornography. But she understood the severity of these sins. She left those sins and made taubah. Now she does not fear to fall into the haram. Now she does not want to get married because she wanted to marry someone but she could not. So she does not want to marry anyone else. If she does not get married ever, will she be sinning? She will take necessary steps to stay away from haram.
Answer
Firstly, the aim of marriage is not to satisfy our lust, rather it is a Sunnah (practice/tradition) of our prophet . The Prophet has said “Nikah is from my Sunnah. Whoever does not practice my Sunnah, he is not of me.” Sunan ibn majah, vol. 3, pg. 567, hadith no. 1846, Darul risalah al alamiyah.)
Among the aims of marriage is to guard our chastity and to have children. There are many benefits of raising righteous children in this world and in the hereafter.
Secondly, Samurah says that the prophet has prohibited us from practicing Tabattul (Refraining from marriage so as to totally engage oneself in worship). (Sunan ibn majah, vol. 3, pg. 568, hadith no. 1849, Darul risalah al alamiyah) In other words the Prophet has prohibited monasticism.
In normal situations it is Sunnah Muakkadah to marry, and one will be slightly sinful (blameworthy in the eyes of Allah) if he/she does not marry. If someone has extreme level of lust then it is wajib to marry.
Only Allah knows best.
