Can you make intention for Zakat after money is stolen?
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
One of the conditions for dispensing zakat is that there must be an intention of zakat when giving the poor or the worthy recipients. If after giving the poor the money with the intention of debt but then changes his intention to zakat when the poor refuses to pay back his debt, the zakat would not be done.
Similarly in the aforementioned situation if one’s wealth is stolen and he in turns makes the intention of zakat, his zakat will not be accepted. (Ahsanul Fatawa p.250 v.4 & Fatawa Rahimiyah p.12 v.2)
