Question:

Salam. If a person had a spiritual guide who then passed away, and due to lack of knowledge at the time they ended up giving bay'ah to someone else, whose mureed are they now? The first sheikh or the second sheikh? After learning that you can't give bay'ah to someone else after already being mureed to one sheikh (as the heart lies with the first sheikh) where does that leave the mureed?

Answer:

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

Unfortunately, your question did not seem clear to me. From a juridical perspective, it is not prohibited for someone to seek help and advice from someone else who is more knowledgeable, experienced, elderly or God-conscious to guide them in their spiritual affairs. In fact, from various Qur’anic verses, we understand that it is encouraged for all Muslims to help one another in enjoining good and forbidding evil.

Allah Ta’ala says: {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.} [Maidah: 2] He also says: {You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.} [Al Imran: 110]

If someone’s spiritual mentor passes away, then it is not wrong for them to seek help from someone else. It is not clear what you mean by ‘their heart lies with the first sheikh’.
