Question

Assalamu Alaikum.

I am very troubled and unsure of what to do. Last year I was in a relationship with a non-Muslim girl. We committed Zina and she also got pregnant. I just found out recently that the baby was born.

I have prayed and prayed to Allah for forgiveness as I know it's a very big sin. I cannot even think of anything else apart from what my family would say or do and also Allah's punishment.

My family are unaware of this and want me to marry.

My question is, do I need to inform a potential spouse of what I have done?

The non-Muslim understands and does not want me to tell my family but I feel like I cannot breathe nor pray properly because of the action I have committed. I'm always worried and upset of the outcome.

Please advise.

Jazak Allah Khair

Answer:

The feeling of regret you have for what you have done is a sign of belief and Allah’s guidance. It is evident that zina is strictly prohibited in the Shari’ah and strict punishments have been laid out for those who commit it. However, we as human beings can slip up and make mistakes. Do not let shaytan make you despair of the mercy of Allah Ta’ala. Continue making sincere repentance and make a firm intention that you will never come near this disgraceful act which leads to the wrath of Allah Ta’ala.

It will be best that you get married as soon as you can in order to protect yourself from falling into such actions in the future. By principle, you do not have to let your future wife know about your sin. However, if you think the non-Muslim girl will interrupt your life and cause problems, it’s best you explain it to the person you will get married to in order for it to not be a surprise to her. It’s best though, that you hide your sin as much as you can.
