Question

Assalam Alaikum,

My daughter has married a non-Muslim in the registrar's office.

What should be my relationship with her? How should I treat her? As of now, I have broken all contacts with her and prohibited her entry into my house.

Answer:

This is a delicate matter that can only be best handled by yourself since you are more aware of the positive and negative outcomes. However, it is evident that a kind approach almost always has a better outcome than a harsh approach. Therefore, with a great deal of wisdom, do not treat her harshly as this can make her develop a great deal of hate towards yourself, your family, and Muslims and Islam by extension.

Rather, be moderate when dealing with her and constantly remind her of Allah’s orders and how this temporary love she has for this disbeliever can make her end up in the everlasting punishments of Allah Ta’ala.

Firstly, try winning her trust and love and thereafter invite her to have small short discussions with you and then speak about Allah’s orders, etc. At the same time, however, do not make it seem like you are now agreeing or pleased with what she has done. Rather always be firm and clear that you are not pleased, and most importantly, Allah Ta’ala is not pleased with what she has done.

Lastly, give her the idea of giving da’wah to her unbelieving spouse, as making him convert to Islam is better than her living with a disbeliever.
