Question

I am having a back operation. Insha’Allah next week and am concerned about my missed Fardh Salahs. How should I make up for these?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

The jurists have mentioned a dispensation where one cannot perform the Ruku and Sujud (bowing and prostration) by moving the head slightly for the bowing and slightly more for the prostration. If one is lying on the back in a hospital or even at home then this is facilitated by having the head propped up with a cushion.

If one cannot pray with such head movements, the prayer will not obligatory upon him, nor will he have to make up the prayers if they exceed five prayers. (Badaius Sanai p.105 v.1)

If one could have prayed by head movements and did not pray for some reason then he will have to do Qadha of all those prayers missed.
