Question

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa barkaatahu, mufti saheb.

Is it permissible to offer salaat on a four-legged bed which is above the ground if
1) the mattress is not that thick.
2) if the mattress is thick but we will keep a hardboard or book beneath the prayer mat at the place of sajdah?

Answer

It is obligatory to prostrate on something which the forehead can completely stabilize; prostration is not permitted on things such as snow, hay, or rice in which the head cannot stabilize or settle.  (Nurul Idah p.118)

The conclusion we can come to is that it is permissible to prostrate on such mattresses which is quite stiff and hard; as long as the worshipper can place his forehead and nose firmly on the surface when prostrating. (Fathul Qadeer p.304 v.1)
