Question:

I need to do istikhara for something really important in my life. however, I admit I smoked charas (a form of weed) 37 days ago, meaning there are still 3 days till my prayers count. Istikhara requires nafl prayer. Will my istikhara count if I start today? Or should I wait 3 days since my prayers don’t count?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Abdullah bin ‘Umar (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever drinks Khamr, Salat is not accepted from him for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it, then Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it, then Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it a fourth time, Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days, and if he were to repent, Allah would not accept his repentance, and he will be given to drink from the river of Al-Khabal. They said: O Aby ‘Abdur-Rahman! What is the river of Al-Khabal? He said: A river of the pus from the inhabitants of the Fire.” [1]

“Salat is not accepted from him for forty days” meaning one will not attain the Sawaab and will be deprived of reward although Salat will be performed on behalf of him by fulfilling the conditions and compulsory acts of prayers. [2]

In conclusion, we advise you to make sincere repentance and you may perform Salatul Istikhara, inshallah, Allah the Almighty will guide you to your matters.
