Question

My question is after urine when I stand up sometimes I feel little drops come out, even I have satisfied with urine, in this situation, my clothes will be unclean or not can I go for salah.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah passed by two new graves, and he said: ‘They are being punished, but they are not being punished for anything major. One of them was heedless about preventing urine from getting on his clothes, and the other used to walk about spreading malicious gossip.'”[1]

In the terminologies of Islamic jurisprudence, there is the term ‘Al-Istibra’ which means to clear the urine passage from droplets of urine until one is confident that no droplets will exit the urine passage. This is a compulsory act after urinating.[2]

An example of this as explained by my teachers is that of a hose pipe used for watering plants etc. After turning the tap off if one was to move or swing the pipe water droplets which are remaining in the pipe will exit from the pipe.

In this manner urine droplets also remain in the urine passage which may exit due to movement and therefore practical steps need to be adopted before one can perform wudhu and salah as they will nullify the two and the clothing will become impure.

Some practical steps that can be taken are:

  1. Coughing
  2. Using tissue paper
  3. Going for a walk
  4. Lying down
  5. Squatting etc.

There are many more methods that can be adopted and this will differ for every individual. [3]

In regards to your question, precautions must be taken to ensure to clear the urine passage of any drops. With the exiting of the drops, the wudhu will be nullified and therefore salah cannot be performed and if the drops make contact with clothes, they will need to be cleaned.

Mufti Rasheed Ahmed (may Allah have mercy upon him) has stated:

“The aim of Al-Istibrah is so that a person’s mind comes to ease and one is confident that no droplet will exit the urine passage. If one is not content (about a drop exiting) then it will not be proper to start wudhu in such a state. A person who experiences droplets exiting for a longer period of time should relieve himself well before the prayer time.”[4]
