Question

Salaams, If my daughter has gold that was given to her as a gift from someone, do we need to pay zakat on it? Would it be under me or my wife?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Zakah is necessary for a free (not a slave), mature (baligh), sane Muslim, when they own surplus amount of Nisaab quantum and a lunar year, passes over that wealth. If your daughter fits the above definition, then she is responsible for her Zakah.^[1] However, if she has not reached the age of puberty, then Zakah is not necessary on her even if she possesses Nisaab amount of quantum.^[2]
