Question:
Which duas should be read while performing tawaf?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
It is mustahab, when touching the Black Stone, the first time and also when commencing tawaf, to say:
: بِسمِ اللَّهِ واللَّهُ أكْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ إيمانًا بِكَ وتَصدِيقًا بِكِتابِكَ، ووَفاءً بِعَهْدِكَ واتِّباعًا لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ ﷺ.
In the name of Allah: Allah is greater. O Allah, with belief in you and faith in your book, and in fulfilment of your pact and following the sunnah of you prophet1
It is desirable to repeat this dua when coming parallel to the stone in every circumambulation.
When running in the first three circuits of tawaf one should say:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ حجا مبرورا وذنْبًا مَغْفُورًا، وسَعْيًا مَشْكُورًا
O Allah may my Hajj be accepted, my sins forgiven, and my effort be rewarded.2
He should say during the remaining four circuits:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِر وارْحَمْ، واعْفُ عَمّا تَعْلَمْ وأنْتَ الأعَزُّ الأكْرَم، اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنا آتنا في الدُّنْيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقِنا عَذابَ النّارِ
O Allah, forgive and have mercy on and pardon that which you know. You are most Mighty and noble.3
According to Imam ash-Shafi, the best thing that one can say during tawaf is:
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنا آتِنا في الدُّنْيا
O Allah our Lord grant us good in this world.4
