Question:

My question is that if one person goes with his friends to places haunted by jinns and they take care by reciting the masnoon duaas and Surahs for Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)’s Protection, would this be a permissible act or a sin? I have seen some videos online where some people do this and they have youtube channels where they earn money from it. Is this earning haraam? Because in some videos, they get hurt maybe because the Angels of protection fly away possibly due to this act (of going to haunted places purposefully) being a sin. Please let me know. I used to watch these videos for the thrill.

Answer:

The Prophet [sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam] informed us that mostly shayateen and jinn inhabit places of disobedience and impurity such as rubbish tips, dunghills and places where people relieve themselves. It comes in a Hadith that the Prophet [sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam] said, “Indeed these areas of impurity are places where the shayateen and jinn are present, so when any of you goes to relieve himself let him say, ‘Oh Allah I seek refuge in you from male and female demons.’” He [sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam] also prohibited from praying in such places, sought refuge from their evil and whisperings through the recitation of Surah Falaq, Surah Naas, Ayatul Kursi, and Surah Baqarah etc. as narrated through numerous well-known ahadith. Therefore, if the Prophet’s [sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam] sunnah is full of advice against going to such places and the duaas of protection are a testimony to the reality of their potential evil effects then we must avoid such places. It should most definitely not be treated as a form of entertainment and thrill-seeking.
