Question:

Is it permissible to buy cat food that contains fish only ingredients and no chicken?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Yes, it is permissible to buy cat food that has fish only ingredients. Fish is ḥalāl without any requirement of slaughter. What is forbidden to feed animals from an Islamic law point of view, is a dead carcass (meaning an animal that was not slaughtered causing blood flow). It is best to consult a veterinarian to see if the fish is suitable for the cat’s well-being. – (Al-Fatāwā Al-Hindīyyah, Vol 5, Page 344 and 361)¹
