Assalamualykum
Dear brother is it permissible for a man to wear a diamond(s) wedding ring….
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
Answer
Men are only permitted to wear a silver ring. Rings made from materials other than silver, such as stone, metal, brass are not permissible.
It is stated in Durrul Mukhtar that, “It is not permissible for a man to adorn himself with any type of gold and silver besides a ring… And it is not permissible to wear a ring except that which is made from silver, as silver rings are sufficient (for stamping), therefore it will be unlawful to wear rings made from other than silver i.e. from stones etc.” (Vol 5, P253)
The above is in regards to the ring itself and not the stone that is set in the ring. The stone may be of any type. (Durrul Mukhtar, Vol 5, P254) Therefore a diamond may be used in a silver ring.
In the books of Islamic Jurisprudence it is mentioned that apart from a ruler, judge or those who have a need for it (for stamping as in the old days) it is better not to wear a ring. It was worn by the prophet for a reason (stamping) and not as an adornment. (Durrul Mukhtar, Vol 5, P255) Therefore although it is permissible for a man to wear a diamond ring which is made from silver it is better not to do so.
