Assalam-u-alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu Respected Alims in Islam, I want to know if it is allowed to use duff in Islam.
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
Answer:
Aisha (radi allahu anha) narrates, “Allah’s Messenger (sallal lahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Make this marriage publicly known, solemnize it in the mosques, and play duff in honour of it.” (Tirmidhi, 938)
Due to the above Hadith the scholars have stated that to use the duff on the occasion of nikah is permissible. (Raddul Muhtar, Vol 2, P284)
The purpose of this is for the announcement of the nikah and this should not be used as some musical instrument to create pleasure and entertainment (Raddul Muhtar, Vol 5, P247). It should be used in such a way, which does not have any resemblance to music or the ways of the disbelievers. The Messenger of Allah (sallal lahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever imitates a nation will be amongst them.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no. 4031)
There is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars in regards to using the duff apart from the occasion of nikah i.e. nashids etc, therefore it is better to avoid using the duff on such occasions.
Only Allah knows best.
