Question:

As Salaamu Alaykum, I once was volunteering for a Masjid and community hub, making tea cost about 50p, near the end of the day I made tea for someone and they paid, one of the brothers said to me that the institute isn’t collecting money now (ie fun daytime is over) so I went to the person and gave their money back, what is the consequence of the ingredients I used but not taking money?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

If the person who told you that the institute is no longer collecting money meant that you can give things out for free, then there is no consequence for your actions. However, if he meant that they are no longer collecting the money but things need to be paid for then in that case you would owe them the 50p. It would be best for you to clarify what was meant just in case you owe them the money. Debt is the right of someone else so it is necessary to fulfill it.

Only Allah knows best.
