Question:

What are the details regarding leaving the masjid once azaan is made?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

While we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Huraira RA in a Masjid a man went out of the Masjid after the call to prayer had been announced. Sayyiduna Abu Huraira’s eyes followed him till he went out of the Masjid. Upon this Sayyiduna Abu Huraira RA said: “This man has disobeyed Abu’l- Qasim (i.e., the Prophet ﷺ). [Sahih al-Muslim: Hadith 655; Sunan Abi Dāwūd: Hadith 536; Sunan at-Tirmizi: Hadith 204; Sunan an-Nasā’i: Hadith 684, 733] [1]

Unless there is an urgent need then one cannot miss the congregational Salah after hearing the Azān being called.

[1]حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ، عَنْ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ، قَالَ كُنَّا قُعُودًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فَأَذَّنَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ يَمْشِي فَأَتْبَعَهُ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ بَصَرَهُ حَتَّى خَرَجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏
