Question:

My dad will undergo heart bypass surgery and as we know anything can happen during surgery so as a precautionary measure I made him do taubah and tajdeed-e-iman (renewal of faith) with the words that “whatever kufr statement or action I have committed unknowingly please forgive me and I renew my faith” then he said shahada, after 2-3 days on a phone call I was asking him to do taubah again but he got irritated and handed over phone to my brother, is this kufr? I am afraid if my dad committed kufr here, also renewal of faith like this valid?, I am praying that surgery will be successful and I will make my dad do taubah in a good mood and insist he live remaining life in ibadaah

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Alhamdulillah your father took your well-meaning advice and made taubah, renewed his Imaan as a precautionary measure, and recited the Shahaadah.

His irritation was due to your telling him to ‘repeat’ the process, rather than the making of the taubah. Your father is in a stressful situation, thus you should uplift his spirits. Tell him that he will recover soon, and all will be well InshaAllah.

He did not lose his Imaan by reacting irritably to your persistence and he repeated an optional act. There is no need to keep asking him to ‘renew his faith‘. Your father is probably making taubah on his own.
