Question:
I have a shop on a print-on-demand website and I used a graphic designing platform to create a banner for my shop. I uploaded the banner two years ago and suddenly today I realised that I had not complied with the license of the graphic design platform with regards to the banner and I just changed the banner which now complies with the license.
For two years, I had made many sales with designs that actually complied with the license and had nothing to do with the design of the banner.
I wanted to know if my income would be correct.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
The income earned from your shop for the last two years is Islamically correct and Halāl.
Technically you have not committed any crime in the laws of shari’a by making a mistake in the banner. However, for someone living in a un islamic Country, if the laws of the land are in accordance with what is mentioned in Islāmic teachings one must abide by it.
In the above scenario, none of the laws of Islāmic teaching were violated, so your earnings would be Halāl.
السمع والطاعة على المرء المسلم فيما أحب وكره ما لم يؤمر بمعصية، فإن أمر بمعصية فلا سمع عليه ولا طاعة»
“It is necessary upon a Muslim to listen to and obey the ruler in all matters, as long as one is not ordered to carry out a sin. If he is commanded to commit a sin, then there is no adherence and obedience.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhī, No. 1707)
