Question:
I’m currently training to be a dentist and I’m concerned about some procedures I may carry out in the future. Some cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry like veneers, whitening and composite bonding are not necessary but are done to make teeth look better (fixing chips, cracks or stains). Am I allowed to carry out these procedures being a Hanafi muslim?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
To be able to fit in veneers or do anything extra to the teeth requires extra qualification and specialisation. If the veneers are being put on for beautification purposes then it will not be permissible, however, if a person is doing it for necessities then it will be fine. As for whitening the teeth, it is not really changing Allah’s creation as teeth discolor due to the people themselves.
