Question:

Is making realistic 3d characters/animals (non-fiction) haram?

A 3d model is made with polygons, triangles, vertices, and edges and it relies on various mathematical and three-dimensional maths.

Answer:

Allah states in the Quran

“God’s alone is the dominion over the heavens and the earth. He creates whatever He wills: He bestows the gift of female off-spring on whomsoever He wills, and the gift of male off-spring of whomsoever He wills”

If the 3d animate object is formed with no realistic features or that which resembles humans and that of creation, then it will be permissible. This is only if the features which are being created do not resemble real, life-like features, or if some key features are missing, for example the eyes or the nose.

If all of these features are present and realistic then they will be considered life-like and an impersonation and hence will be impermissible (haram).
