Question:

Assalaamu’alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, I have been told that reading the last 10 surahs of the Qur’an will lessen traffic.

My question is, does this have any basis, and if not, what is the permissibility of it being acted upon and hoping for Allah’s help whilst doing so?

Also, such virtues have seemed to help specific people without exact proof in religious texts, what is the permissibility of doing these and hoping for the same virtue?

Another example would be reading surah qalam onto a pen and hoping for benefit in an exam.

JazakAllahu kairun.

Answer:

Wa alaikum as salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh,

With regards to the last 10 surahs of the Quran being recited to lessen traffic, this has no legal basis from the laws of Shariah for it to be acted upon. The Quran and Hadith are full of prescribed dua’s which are there to be practised in the hope of blessings in the outcome of the practice.

Certain dua’s if prescribed by Ulama who practice them and have yielded results may also be practised, you may contact your local Imam, scholars or teachers for advice.

The example of reading surah qalam onto a pen and hoping for benefit in an exam is not specifically prescribed. However, generally, one may recite the Quran and prescribed dua’s in the hope of blessings and barakah in any given activity. This is from the blessings of Islam.

An example of a dua from the Quran for travelling which may be used is where Allah ﷺ says:

{That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favour of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say:

Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it. And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return.”

[Surah Zukhruf, v13-14]

Transliteration of the dua from the above verses:

[Subhaanal lazee sakhkhara lana haaza wa maa kunnaa lahoo muqrineen. Wa innaaa ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon.]
