Question:
As Salam ‘alaikum!
- Is the Tahajjud a prayer after sleep or after the Isha?
- Is permissible to chat on social networks with girls without flirting etc? For example, having conversations on religious topics.
- Which of the Hanafi scholars were considered as Mujtahids in the Madhab?
- Is it the truth that Imam Abu Yusuf stated that any four rakats of Nafl with one taslim are one prayer? Is it true that he refused this opinion?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
1. The time for Tahajjud begins from the time Isha comes in until Fajr time. One can pray Tahajjud anytime during this window although the preferred time to pray Tahajjud is during the last third of the night.
As for whether or not it is necessary to sleep before Tahajjud, the general understanding is that Tahajjud is prayed after sleeping for a bit since the word Tahajjud refers to the struggle one makes to wake up from sleep and pray. If someone prays after Isha before sleeping, it is generally called Qiyam al Layl.
2. In general, it is best to avoid interaction with the opposite gender if there isn’t a need for interaction. Chatting online with girls regarding religious topics wouldn’t be encouraged unless there is a need to do so, such as when there is a relationship between a teacher and student or the like.
Furthermore, if such interaction is taking place, it is best to have it in a group chat or on a public platform where the interaction isn’t kept private between the two individuals. That is because chatting online is similar to chatting in person and the prophet forbade two people of the opposite gender from interacting with each other alone, without the presence of a third person. While this may seem strict, these rulings are put in place as a precaution as Shaytan uses such interactions as an opportunity to spread inappropriateness.
3. There are several levels of Mujtahids, each of which are capable of different things. The six main categories are:
1. Mujtahid fi Sharia
2. Mujtahid al-Masa’il
3. Mujtahid al-Madhab
4. Ashab al-Takhrij
5. Ashab al-Tarjih
6. Ashab al-Tamyiz
Scholars such as Imam Muhammad ibn Hasan al Shaibani and Imam Abu Yusuf would be considered Mujtahids in the Madhab.
4. Yes, the opinion of Imam Abu Yusuf as well as the more common opinion of Imam Abu Hanifah is that it is permissible to pray four rak’ah nafl with one taslim. However, the other Imams within the Hanafi Madhab disagree, leading to a difference of opinion within the Madhab.
Only Allah knows best.
