Question:
Assalamualaikum W W. We are going for Umrah insha’Allah. My daughter has started to have her period today.
My questions are:
– What she should do? Does she do everything apart from tawaf?
– Also, can she do Umrah again if her period stops while we are in Makkah?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Answer:
Wa alaykum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
One in a state of major impurity such as during her period cannot enter the Masjid Al-Haram [1] nor perform Tawaf [2]. Thus, of the required acts of Umrah (i.e. Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and trimming the hair [3]), the one which she will be unable to perform during her period is the Tawaf [4].
She is first encouraged to do Ghusl before entering the state of Ihram [5]. She should then enter Ihram as normal, except that she will not perform the Sunnah two Rak’ah at the time of entering Ihram [6].
Upon reaching Makkah, she should try to delay performing the Tawaf until after her period ends. Should her period continue until the departure date, then she may perform Tawaf despite her period, perform Sa’I, trim her hair and pay Dam afterwards to compensate [7] (a small animal such as a sheep or goat or one-seventh of a large animal such as a camel or cow to be sacrificed in the Haram [8], approx. £160 – £200).
Only Allah knows best.
