Question:

Salaam, so I prayed my fajr qadha salah. After I had finished, I found a small wet patch on my trousers where my back buttock would be and it was a small amount so less than 3-5cm I think. When I smelt it, it didn’t smell like urine. Also during my salah, I am 100% sure I felt nothing come out so I’m not sure why this happens.

It has happened before but that time it smelt like urine however, this time it doesn’t.

I didn’t redo my wudu or my salah after this and I just wet that area to cleanse it. But was I right in not repeating my salah or my wudu?

Please could you help as I’m not sure if I’ve done the right thing in this situation.

Jazak’allah

Answer:

Wa’alaykumussalaam,

As this wet patch was colourless, odourless and water-thin, you should assume it was simply leftover water from performing istinjaa’. This does not break wudhu or salah.

However, if there is no possibility that it was istinjaa’ water (for example, if istinjaa’ was not done with water), then there is also the possibility that it could have been a substance known as Rutbat Al-Farj. This is a white or clear liquid which comes out of a woman’s private part without sexual desire. It is like water or sweat or of a viscosity between sweat and pre-ejaculatory fluid. This also does not break wudhu or salah.1

Due to the lack of smell, we can confirm it was not urine. Liquid discharge from the back passage is usually only due to illness, and it is most commonly mucus, faeces or blood. This also does not seem to be what you experienced. However, if you continue to notice signs of liquid coming from your back passage, it would be advisable for you to consult your local GP or other health professional.2

In general, while conscientiousness in matters of deen is certainly praiseworthy, if doubt is affecting your ability to perform your salah normally it may be going too far and becoming a hindrance. Once you have completed wudhu you are considered pure unless you are certain that your wudhu has been broken. Ignore vague doubts and suspicions, especially if they plague you frequently.3

If you are often concerned over whether some dampness on your garments is leftover water from purification or from discharge, one sunnah method to calm your heart would be to sprinkle some water on your private area or garment when you do wudhu. If you have any concerns over dampness after doing so, you can assume it was from that clean sprinkled water.4

Keep in mind the verse regarding wudhu: “It is not Allah’s Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favour upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.” [5:6]

Only Allah knows best.
