Question:

I am a young Muslim woman, I wanted to know if being a veterinarian is permissible for me. I have to interact and speak with non-Mahram daily, and also deal with dogs.

Answer:

Working as a vet with animals is permissible as Islam encourages to help others and especially with animals’ and having to touch dogs for medical reasons is allowed providing care is maintained to purify oneself properly thus by washing the place 7 times. Taking care of anything that meets its saliva.

In terms of working with men in a medical profession it is permissible as long you are covered and there is no fitnah.

Surah Nur ayah 31

وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ ۖ

Sahiḥ al-Bukhārī 3143

غُفِرَ لِامْرَأَةٍ مُومِسَةٍ مَرَّتْ بِكَلْبٍ عَلَى رَأْسِ رَكِيٍّ يَلْهَثُ قَالَ كَادَ يَقْتُلُهُ الْعَطَشُ فَنَزَعَتْ خُفَّهَا فَأَوْثَقَتْهُ بِخِمَارِهَا فَنَزَعَتْ لَهُ مِنْ الْمَاءِ فَغُفِرَ لَهَا بِذَلِكَ

Surat al-An ‘am 6:38

وَمَا مِن دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم

Sahih Muslim hadith 114

إِذَا وَلَغَ الْكَلْبُ فِي إِنَاءِ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُرِقْهُ ثُمَّ لْيَغْسِلْهُ سَبْعَ مِرَارٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏
