Question:
Is Zakat allowed on the following money?
1)Money earned through boxing
2)Money earned through playing chess
3)Money earned by cutting a beard as a barber
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
1.Boxing Income: Impermissible unless rectified. No Zakat due on haram income.
2.Chess Income: Impermissible due to gambling and neglect of obligations.
٢١٩ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ ۖ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نَفْعِهِمَا ۗ وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الْآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ
They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “There is gross sin in them, and some benefits for people, but their sinfulness outweighs their benefit.” And they ask you about what they should give: say, “The surplus.” Thus God explains the revelations to you, so that you may think
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:219)
3.Barber Income for Beard Removal: Impermissible. No zakat due unless repented and corrected.
It is essential to purify one’s income and ensure that earnings are halal, as zakat is only due on lawful wealth. A pious Muslim has always to be cautious about the sources of his earnings. Unlawful earnings invoke the wrath of Almighty Allah and endangers the Muslim’s life in the hereafter as he will be held accountable for such gains. The number of lawful jobs is surely more than those that are unlawful.
As far as the issue of zakat is concerned, if the money you saved during this period has reached the nisab, then you have to give out its zakat according to the percentage prescribed by the Shari`ah.Allah SWT said:
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ
And cooperate with one another in virtuous conduct and conscience, and do not cooperate with one another in sin and hostility. And fear Allah. Allah is severe in punishment. (1) (2)

فَصْلٌ: فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
وَسَأَلْتَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَمَّا يَجِبُ فِيهِ الصَّدَقَة، وَفِي الإِبِلِ وَالْبَقَرِ وَالْغَنَمِ وَالْخَيْلِ، وَكَيْفَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُعَامَلَ مَنْ وَجَبَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ فِي كُلِّ صِنْفٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ الأَصْنَافِ؟
فَمُرْ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا بِأَخْذِ الْحَقِّ وَإِعْطَائِهِ مَنْ وَجَبَ لَهُ وَعَلَيْهِ وَالْعَمَلَ فِي ذَلِكَ بِمَا سَنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ الْخُلَفَاءُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ من سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَمِثْلُ أَجْرِ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ
أَنْ يُنْتَقَصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ، وَمَنْ سَنَّ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُنْتَقَصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ
. هَكَذَا رُوِيَ لَنَا عَنْ نَبِيِّنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَنَا أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ مِمَّنِ اسْتَنَّ بِفِعْلِهِ وَرَضِيَ عَمَلَهُ، وَأَعْظَمَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوَابَهُ، وَأَنْ يُعِينُكَ عَلَى مَا وَلاكَ، وَيَحْفَظَ لَكَ مَا استرعاك.
