Question:

Salam I have seen your fatwa where you said its haram to fantasize about future husband or wife but my question is how about we imagine about future spouse like an unknown person who does not exist and i imagine what qualities i may like to have in my future spouse  but i I don’t imagine dirty things but i imagine good things like we already have babies and playing with the babies with my spouse, or cooking together, how about imagining some qualities I want in my future spouse is that permissible?

Walaykum asalaam, It is permissible to think about the positive qualities you want in a future spouse, as long as your thoughts remain pure and do not lead to sinful desires. Envisioning a good partner with qualities like kindness is encouraged. Allah says in Surah Ar-Rum (30:21), “And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them.” This shows us the natural inclination to imagining a peaceful relationship.

However, it is important to remember to control your thoughts and maintain modesty. Allah advises in Surah An-Nur (24:30), “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them.” This teaches us to avoid thoughts that may lead to impure desires.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also mentioned the importance of choosing a spouse based on their faith and character, as he said, “A woman is married for four reasons: for her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religiousness. So, choose the religious one.”

Therefore, imagining a spouse with good qualities is permissible if it stays within the boundaries of modesty and does not stray into inappropriate fantasies.
